This year I applied on the prestigious World Pulse Changemaker Lab 2022 Program. I was accepted.

This session was a meet and greet session and a short introduction to the program.

What is the Changemaker Lab?

The Changemaker Lab is a sixth month in depth training program focused on creating, strengthening, enhancing and/or escalating your transformative initiatives.

My name is Sabeena Zeghum Ahmed.

I'm a fair trade chocoholic and proud Mancunian! :)

I'm also social entrepreneur, fair trade campaigner and educator.

It is my humble aim, vision of change and legacy is to benefit and provide fair trade producers a fair wage, decent working conditions, financial empowerment and security, a brighter future and increase their channels of distribution.

I realise I can only achieve my vision and legacy through writing, story telling, and retailing their products.

I have started to write about my experiences of being a Muslim female social entrepreneur and hope to publish books about the fair trade producers I support.

I would love the World Pulse Changemakers team to support my self publication career with any guidance and literary support.

I feel a huge weight and responsibility lays upon my shoulders.

As a fair trade campaigner, retailer and educator since 2008 I want to continue to raise awareness for fair trade and ethical producers, artisans and home based workers around the world through story telling before I die.

Last year I was appointed Fair Trade Ambassador with the World Fair Trade Organization and have been trying to create new content in English, Urdu and Arabic on my website and YouTube Channel.

As the only female Muslim social entrepreneur, fair trade campaigner and educator who observes the hijab advocating for Fair Trade at the World Fair Trade Organization I have often felt my voice has been ignored and excluded.

I feel the time is now to write about my experiences and life as a British expatriate, traveller and social entrepreneur.

I would love to change the narrative and dispel the myths surrounding female Muslim social entrepreneurs and encourage the Muslim community particularly, Muslim women to think about social entrepreneurship as a rewarding career.

It is my passion to write books and vlog in English and Urdu.  

I am proud to be an individual associate member of the World Fair Trade Organization, a Badiri Academy and School for Social Entrepreneurs UK fellow, a World Pulse and World Literacy Foundation Ambassador and a qualified PGCE ESOL Practitioner.

The Little Fair Trade Shop

I started my social enterprise The Little Fair Trade Shop during Ramadan 2008.

I knew that this was my calling and vocation.

The Little Fair Trade Shop's mission and core values:

Our mission is to promote self-reliance, empower artisans and their local communities and give them the dignity and respect they so rightly deserve.

We support Fair Trade producers through the sale of our Fair Trade products.

Our supply chain is transparent. It starts with the producer and ends with us. Every step of the way a good thing is being done.

We want our customers to feel happy knowing they have purchased a beautiful product which has been produced by an extraordinarily talented person and in turn supported a sustainable business, a community and the environment.

I feel blessed, privileged and honoured to have met and interviewed the most humble, sincere and inspirational fair trade artisans in the world.

I have traded at the Ripe Organic and Craft market from October 2011 to January 2013 and consciously traded at specialist events such as the Festival at Masdar, the Swiss Business Council Christmas Market, WOMAD Abu Dhabi, DUCTAC, and the Arabian Travel Market.

I am individual associate member of the World Fair Trade Organization and have been a paid member since 2011.

Two of my fair trade films were selected by the Royal Society of Arts as part of their Pakistan Calling series.

I  hope the Changemakers lab will give me the skills and training to provide links and resources for fair trade producers to create, write and produce their own videos as this will be my vision of change.

I want to Write and Publish books and videos about fair trade producers.

Learn, Listen and encourage other participants, share ideas, collaborate and support each others works and initiatives.

I want to increase my confidence, earn respect and learn/share knowledge from other participants.

It has become necessary to change the narrative by amplifying my voice and reiterate that Muslim-women are visible, articulate, strong and passionate about non-traditional career paths.

I am not oppressed and subjugated. I want to dispel the stereotypes about Muslim female hijabi's.

It would be beneficial to understand how to #breakthebarrier and learn the relevant video/presentation/speaking skills and techniques to produce high quality fair trade content for publication, social media online and offline.

I'd like to contribute and share my 37+ years of work experience, team player skills, good listening skills, emotional intelligence, fair trade knowledge, product procurement, product design, retail experience and sense of humour with the other Change maker participants.

I would like leave my vision of change and legacy by writing books and creating videos about the Fair Trade, The WFTO, 10 principles of Fair Trade, the Sustainable Development Goals in Urdu and Arabic, in a fun, informative way to connect with the youth who heavily use social media on a daily basis. In the future I would like to design a training programme/s in English and Urdu for fair trade producers to create high quality content story telling for social media which could lead to sales and wholesale orders.

Lessons 1-7 Reflection and Initiative Update

Despite my shoulder surgeries and low energy levels I managed to watch all the lessons and realised I'm getting older, slower and my eyes cant focus on screens for long periods of time.

I was struggling to write notes and had to watch many of the video lessons multiple times. On a positive note My handwriting did improve over the lesson period. :)

I will post photographs to show the improvement in my cursive writing.

Lesson 1 - Ana's presentation video was informative but I had to watch it several times to understand it.

The handouts were useful, the Problem diagram best fits my initiative.

Lesson 2 - The Guided Vision Journaling session was an interactive session with Jensine Larsen and I learnt that am more than just a social entrepreneur, I have other hobbies and pursuits such as photography, and highlighted that I just want to being happy with life.

I will use the above as motivational tools to move forward to with my manuscripts and video content.

Lesson 3 - Still a little confused about this video and will need to re-watch.

I have however, detailed analysis of my fair trade female producers.

Lesson 4 - This video took me many days to watch.

I think I've figured out what Output, Outcomes and Impact I will be making for this initiative.

I did complete my SMART goals.

However, I do still need to identify how I will evaluate my writing and understand how to design my Initiative Plan.

Lesson 5 - I completed my SWOT analysis and needs.

I also spent a very long time completing my aspirational, social, familial, navigational, professional, community, communication, educational, personal, material, digital assets.

Lesson 6 - This video explained the Gender at Work Framework.

I have tried to complete it the best of my ability but need assistance to understand the change strategy.

Lesson 7 - This was the most calming video. I loved to listen to Ms Benjamin who had the sweetest soothing voice talking about the Logic Model.

I have completed my resource, strategy, audience, outputs, outcomes and impact lists.

I continue to struggle with my shoulders.

I persevered and managed to watch all the lessons for Module 2 part 1.

I had to take my time and watch each video lesson numerous times to take notes.

Lesson 1 - Ana's presentation video was very long (45+ minutes), informative. I wish this had been edited to focus on just the Four Powers worksheet.

As mentioned in my previous Module 1 initiative update I'm getting older, slower and my eyes cant focus on screens for long periods of time.

I am struggling to write notes.

I spent a 4 to 5 hours working through, 'The Four Powers worksheet.'

I think I could write a lengthy blog or play about all the Powers.

What I have realised is that Power Over is a power that is the most difficult to change, overcome and integrate. 

I don't want to sound like a pessimist, but I have been trying to conduct dialogue, interact, visit, invite and above all key stakeholders to include me in their work but to no avail. I will keep the momentum and keep trying.

Lesson 1 part 2, Ana's video presentation/lesson was much shorter at 15+ minutes and I thoroughly enjoyed learning about empowerment, particularly 'The Women's Empowerment Framework which relates to my fair trade artisans and producers.

I have posted the definition of 'Empowerment' in cursive handwriting.

This definition has had an immense impact on me. As I picturise each struggle, challenge and adversity I have had to face personally and professionally, throughout my life, the word resilient was profound. I am resilient!

Lesson 2 - The Building Your Community presentation with Kirthi was very informative and I was very happy it was just under 15 minutes.

In the session  I learnt that to build your community it is important to invite your community to contribute according to their skills set, the time they can volunteer and the interest they have in your initiative. 

I loved this quote and will use it the next time I'm retailing my fair trade products

'When community members get to contribute, they gain ownership over the campaign.

I will use the above as motivational tools to move forward to with my advocacy, fairtrade campaigning, and use these skills to ask my customers to use social media, write in my guest book and talk more about fair trade with their families and friends.

Lesson 3 - I must take the opportunity to comment on Ms. Zulma Miranda's voice. It was very soothing and a pleasure to listen to. I hope she can read my fair trade producer stories for my website. :)

Although, the lesson was approx 16 minutes, there was a lot of information to absorb and digest.

I did however manage to draft my Partnership Mission Statement, and complete  many of the Mapping Partnerships questions - Scan the Eco system exercise.

I hope my confusion regarding the following areas will be erased when we participate in the webinar scheduled Thursday 15th September 2022.

I would like to learn more about the following, Partner mapping template, Design a Partnership Outreach Strategy, Design a Stewardship Plan and A Partnership Memorandum of Understanding. I hope I can use one of the plans in my manuscript or video content.

Lesson 4 - This video presentation was about decision making.

Thank you Kirthi I enjoyed this last video as it all made sense.

I particularly enjoyed listening to your personal examples.

Despite my weak eyesight I will continue to use my social media handles to raise awareness for fair trade artisans.

My Social Change Eco-System    

I've really struggled completing Module 2, Part 2 due to long term health conditions.

First of all I'd like to thank Ana for her time and patience recording lesson 6 despite being ill.

Her dedication proves how much she cares about the Changemaker Lab program and her passion to support everyone who supports World Pulse.

Lesson 5 - Reflection

Lesson 5 focussed on the Social Change Eco-System.

As a social entrepreneur I play many roles these include the following:

Being an Experimenter + a Front Line Responder + a Visionary + a Disrupter + Storyteller + Caregiver. I am definitely a DISRUPTER!!!

Being a storyteller sustains ME and makes me HAPPY!

I could relate to the definition of social change by Grace Lee Boggs.

I've posted my eco-system map above which is very imbalanced!

There are absences of Care givers and Healers.

Sadly, there isn't any support for me!

I thoroughly enjoyed writing about my alignment and aspirations.

My  SMART GOAL is to continue to write blogs and record my vlogs.

My BHAG GOAL (Jim Collins) BIG HAIRY AUDACIOUS GOAL is to publish a series of books about Muslim Female Social Entrepreneurs (fair trade) and create new video content in the form on interviews and documentaries.

Lesson 6 - Reflection

Thank you Thank you Ana, for recording this ultra long session (1hr 16 mins), despite being poorly.

It took me several days to watch this recording and complete all the activities.

I mapped all my stakeholders and discovered my stakeholders who had hidden and visible powers.

My conclusion regarding my stakeholders are that their fears and concerns amounted to my Failure, and not profiting from sales from my book/s.

Their lack of interest in my subject area Muslim Female Social Entrepreneurs in Fair Trade.

I struggled to read Marshall Ganz's - Power With/Power Over Table, the font was far too small.

I wish this lesson had been recorded in 10-15 bite size recordings/videos.

My attention span is awful and I had to rewind and re-watch certain segments over and over to understand each theory.

I truly hope I can complete this program because I am so far behind.

I'm still optimistic!

This was a very interesting and impactful video.

Dawn and Manasa explained what is an elevator pitch and the key elements of an elevator pitch.

This video recording was I hour and 14 minutes + and covered the subject of story telling techniques.

I enjoyed listening about 'tips for your assignments.' 

I chose the great angular approach for my elevator pitch, although I now feel it is far too simplistic.

I may have to re-record this video and include more details in the future.

I used the golden circle theory, why, how and what.

I need to re-read the resource links again.

I have blogged and explained my fair trade journey on my website but may need to create a concise version.

I did start an infographic timeline which is available on my website The Little Fair Trade Shop, this is dated from 2008-2017.

Lesson 6 - with Andrea Arzaba

I thoroughly enjoyed listening about how to effectively work with the media.

I loved Andrea's quote in her presented.

'Nobody will magically find your work.

Lesson 4

This video was presented by Dawn Arteaga and Manasa Ram Raj.

It was titled Community Building Initiative.

Dawn presented a real life example of an initiative,

'To improve public schooling options of elementary schools in her neighbourhood.'

I loved the Dress Up Brigade!

I thoroughly enjoyed this session.

Dawn is a natural story teller. 

Her voice is very calming and the video made sense.

Dawn used a quote from the lady who opened her school.

'We organised a grassroots efforts with other parents to open this school. As they say, it really does take a village.'

 

Lesson 5

This video was presented by Kirthi.

This session was titled applying building blocks.

Kirthi used her own initiative SAAHAS as an example.

Kirthi's vision

'To enable access to legal, medical emergency, and shelter support for survivors of GBV.'

I have the utmost respect for Kirthi and thoroughly enjoyed learning about Kirthi's application and its features.

Finally, I never thought I'd get this far. 

My right shoulder has been very painful, but, I'm determined to complete the program.

 

Module 5

Lesson 1

This video session was presented by Kirthi and was titled Fundraising, Financing and Accounting.

Kirthi covered Fundraising for your initiative, Grants, Crowdfunding and Financing for Specific Projects.

The following points have had the most impact.

- Rely on professional support for quality account maintenance.

- Prioritise transparency in book keeping.

Lesson 2

This video session was presented by Ms Benjamin and devoted to Grant Writing.

Ms Benjamin covered the areas of Grants v Donations, the Key Aspects of the grant writing process, the grant life cycle process and the grant writing steps.

As a visual learner I particularly enjoyed the diagrams and resource links.

Many thanks to Ms Benjamin for a detailed and informative session.

This session was presented by Nuria Gracia and titled Bootstrapping.

During 2016 I enrolled on the Future Learn Social Enterprise 'Business Doing Good' course with the Middlesex University Business School and the Jindal Centre for Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship.

The video 'What is Fairtrade?' was recorded for the Future Learn Online Course: Social Enterprise Turning Ideas into Action, The Middlesex University Business School (2016).

 

Participants were asked to submit a video about their social enterprise and enter the International Social Innovation Challenge 2016.

I've posted my video below.

 I missed the Training Tuesday about Global Giving due to my painful shoulders and was relieved I managed to log on to this session with Elisa and Ana.

The session was structured, with case studies and information about how to establish a Go Fund Me page.

Elisa also talked about how story telling was a very important factor to gain momentum, exposure and essential funds.

I'm glad I attended.

Changemaker Lab Live Webinar

January 2023

I participated in this webinar hosted by Aparna Nagesh and Ana Lozano.

I was thrilled and moved to tears during Aparna's training session about Somatic Practices for Self-Care.

It was an emotional session where Aparna openly talked about her bereavement and healing journey since her mother's passing, a subject I could connect and relate to after my beloved mother returned to the Almighty after a 4 year struggle with metastatic breast cancer.

It was refreshing to hear her talk so openly about her loss and how she has used her grief to move on with her life.
