My Fairtrade Ethical Ramadan 2021 Video

This year I celebrated Fairtrade Fortnight 2021 alone shielding in London, UK.

This year the Fairtrade Foundation's campaign is about Climate Change, Fairtrade and You.

Continuing the theme I thought I'd continue campaigning for fairtrade farmers and producers by raising awareness for fair trade and ethical products during Ramadan.

Fairtrade Ramadan Day 1

I started the week supporting fairtrade banana producers, or as my sister calls me 'banana babe.'

Fairtrade tea supporting Kenyan and Indian fair trade tea farmers, Fairtrade Ramadan with Sabeena Ahmed

Had a strong and sweet fairtrade brew at Iftar this evening.

Support Kenyan and Indian tea farmers this Ramadan.

'Buying Co-op Fairtrade tea means you're making a difference.

Fairtrade guarantees farmers a minimum price, and an additional premium paid to workers to invest in business or community projects of their choice.

In India, the workers at Coonoor and Parkside Tea Estates have spent Fairtrade Premium on community welfare initiatives such as establishing a Women's Empowerment Programme, setting up diabetes screening and eye tests, and funding tuition fees and transportation for local school children.

The Fairtrade Premium has also funded environmental projects such as the Plastic Awareness Programme conducted at the Coonoor tea estate.'

The pineapple in this pack has been grown organically by farmers' groups.

Once fully ripe, the fruits are hand sliced, and dried in specially designed solar driers.

Selling the pineapples brings in household income to provide, for example, children's schooling, healthcare and better energy and water supplies.

So enjoy these delicious pineapples knowing they are good for you, the environment and the communities that produce them.

I've twinned my toilet with a latrine in Chamiwawa, Katete, Eastern Province, Zambia.

Good sanitation and clean drinking water are fundamental to communities. Yet 1 in 4 people worldwide don't have somewhere safe, private or hygienic to go to the toilet. The human and economic impact of this enormous.

Without a loo, Sita's young children were constantly sick with diarrhoea, and Sita had no choice but to borrow money from family, neighbours or the medical centre, to buy vital medicine.

'It felt like we would never get out of debt. We felt hopeless, trapped. I stopped wanting to live.'

Thanks to the work of a Toilet Twinning partner, Sita's family have built a latrine. Now, the children are healthy and the family can afford to send them to school.

Day 19

The Little Fair Trade Blog, Fairtrade Ethical Ramadan 2021 with Sabeena Ahmed

I don't drink soft drinks but thought I'd try Karma Cola made from fairtrade cola nuts and organic ingredients for iftar today.

The Little Fair Trade Blog, Fairtrade Ethical Ramadan 2021 with Sabeena Ahmed

1% of revenue from all their drinks goes to the Karma Foundation, helping to empower their growers in Sierra Leone both economically and socially. So no one misses out – and that sounds like fair play to us.

About Karma Cola

When we started out with our first drink, Karma Cola, there was no such thing as a Fairtrade cola nut. That's why we set up the Karma Foundation: to source our magical main ingredient in a way that supports the people that grow it.

Here's a fact that might shock you: the cola nut has been around for centuries, chewed by the people of West Africa for energy and used as a symbol of respect and friendship.

Along came a certain big name cola brand and hijacked this ingredient for itself. PSA: that cola doesn't even contain real cola nut any more, it definitely isn't Fairtrade – and even though billions of its colas are drunk every day, they definitely don't benefit the people who discovered cola nut in the first place.

The Karma Foundation works to improve the economic and social independence of our cola nut growers in Sierra Leone. Our work has been so game-changing that we were crowned the World's Fairest Trader by The Fairtrade Foundation in 2014.

A lot has changed since then – we've got seven more drinks to prove it – but some things have stayed the same: Karma Drinks continues to create drinks that taste good and do good, and a large part of that is working with Fairtrade ingredients.

As a small company, we rely on the Fairtrade label as something of an outsourced conscience.

We know that when our drinks wear the Fairtrade badge, they've been made in a way that benefits the people growing our ingredients. And more importantly, you know we're fulfilling our promise.

For us, The Fairtrade Foundation is a third party organisation with a rigorous and transparent auditing system our customers can trust. When they see the certification on our products, they feel confident the claims we make are honest and accurate.

For more than two decades, Divine Chocolate and our farmer co-op partners have shared a commitment to empowering women.

Together, we support women in cocoa farming so they may develop the skills and confidence to grow better cocoa, build better communities, and thrive in business.

It’s as much a business model as a social mission. Divine Chocolate is the only Fairtrade chocolate company co-owned by cocoa farmers. And, of the 100,000 Kuapa Kokoo farmers who co-own the company, more than a third are women.

CECAQ-11, the farmer co-op in São Tomé which produces the cocoa in our Divine Organic range, is made up of 1,135 members. More than a third of the members in CECAQ-11 are women, too.

Look forward to tasting this Equal Exchange Chocolate Bar.

Chunks of lightly toasted almonds add delicious flavour and texture to this slightly sweet dark chocolate bar.

Fairtrade Ethical Ramadan 2021 with Sabeena Ahmed

This dark chocolate is not only made from fairly traded ingredients, it is soy and gluten free as well as certified organic serving as an exquisite treat for everyone!

Made with a blend of cacao beans from Peru and the Dominican Republic, this rich bar is also palm oil free.

For more information on the farmers that supply the cacao in this smooth bar read below: CONACADO Co-op in the Dominican Republic and CACVRA in Peru.

In 1988, CONACADO (the National Confederation of Dominican Cacao Producers) was founded to organise farmers struggling to survive low global cocoa market prices, to improve the quality of cacao from farmers, and to access new international markets. The co-operative has grown from 700 farmers to over 9,500 members today, and has a strong focus on organic and sustainable production.

The farmers of CONACADO now export roughly 25% of the cacao from the Dominican Republic, and the co-operative is the largest exporter of organic cacao in the world.

Through Fair Trade, CONACADO, has been able to invest in its quality systems, build wells for safe drinking water, repair schools and health centres, and more.

CACVRA (the Agrarian Coffee Co-operative of the Apurimac River Valley) was formed in 1969 to market coffee for small-scale farmers in Peru. The co-op was founded by indigenous farmers who had migrated to the Andean district of the Ayacucho in search of better livelihoods.

In the 1980’s, the co-op and surrounding communities in the remote Apurimac Valley were severely impacted by the social and political conflict occurring in the province.

Within the last several years, CACVRA has re-established strong export volumes of coffee, and has also become a significant producer of organic cacao. The co-op now consists of nearly 1,600 members, and CACVRA has invested substantial resources into cultivating and marketing cacao of the highest quality.

For VEGO, human rights, animal welfare and environmental protection are all equally important and inseparable.

Always on the look-out for alternatives to improve our packaging, we are happy to announce that by the end of 2020, we will no longer use recyclable foil for our VEGO bars, but a fully compostable flow-pack instead!

We donate, at least, 10% of our annual profits to NGO’s whose work we feel strongly about. Throughout the years, we have donated to various organizations that are committed to the fight for Animal Rights, Human Rights and the protection of the environment.

Fairtrade Ethical Ramadan 2021 - Day 24 Chocolates From Heaven with Sabeena Z Ahmed

 Chocolates From Heaven anyone?

I love orange and dark chocolate.

About Chocolates From Heaven
In Papua New Guinea we work in partnership with PUR Project.

We focus on quality and through improved taste creates added value for everyone involved with chocolate, from farmer to consumer. The program lies on education, training and empowerment of local farmers to increase their productivity, bridging economic gaps and enhancing sustainability.

Our mission is to regenerate the Earth, by planting and saving trees in Papua New Guinea on and around the cocoa plantations. Planting trees is good for the climate, as well as countless social and economic benefits.

Since January 2020 we started with donating 2,5 % of our revenue from Chocolates from Heaven to our partner for planting trees. With this money PUR Project brings its field expertise to implement agroforestry at a landscape level with smallholder cocoa producers working with us. The objective is to reconnect communities and economy with the ecosystem, bringing nature-based solutions in the conversation to create a business model resilient to climate change and improve farmers livelihoods.

All the cocoa is organic and Fairtrade certified.

Fairtrade Ethical Ramadan 2021 with Sabeena Ahmed - Seed and Bean Truffles

ABOUT SEED AND BEAN

Seed & Bean was founded in June 2005 with the idea to create an ethical range of confectionery. The focus was on always using organic ingredients, using small-scale suppliers and being brave and wild with flavours; Chocolate with a Wild Side.

WHERE DID IT ALL BEGIN?

The name Seed and Bean came from the initial chocolate concept which was covering seeds and beans in chocolate. From there we evolved to chocolate bars, similar to what we do today, but looking a little bit different...

Seed and Bean is 100% organic; Fairtrade where possible, and all our products are ethically sourced and handmade in England. Our production facility is deliberately small: our batch size is just 45 litres, compared to large industrially-produced chocolatiers who make batches of 20-50,000 litres a batch! When it comes to chocolate, we really are chocolate artisans.

And then in 2019 we felt the brand needed another refresh to highlight all our ethics as clearly as possible, as well as responding to our customer feedback about what they wanted to really stand out on pack. This led us to what we look like today...

OUR ETHICS

We have been ethical from the very start, and since we rebranded we have taken this to another level by sourcing and using 100% compostable foil which made us the first UK chocolate brand to have fully compostable packaging. Our inner foil is made from Natureflex™, a specially sourced, flexible cellulose film which is made from eucalyptus wood pulp, putting us at the forefront of the zero plastic, zero waste initiative. See more about our ethics here.

OUR FLAVOURS

First and foremost we pride ourselves on our flavours. We have always made sure to be challenging with our flavour combinations, to create flavours that no one else is doing, and that you might have never seen or tried before. Live on the wild side of taste with our English Botanically inspired adventurous and unique flavours. There is something for everyone in our vast range of 18 flavours.

Step-by-Step Guide:

1. For the best results, always apply to freshly cleansed skin.

2. Simply mix a heaped tea spoon of 3-in-1 Maca Mask with a small amount of pure cool water or your chosen custom blend (see below for a guide by skin type) - you need enough to form a thick paste, we find it works best to add little and build up until you have created your desired consistency.

3. Apply an even layer over the skin using a brush or your finger tips, carefully avoiding the eye area, lips and hairline.

4. Leave for 15-20 minutes, allowing the actives to purify, polish and revitalise the skin. You may feel a slight tingling sensation as circulation is activated.

5. Wash away with water and an Organic Face Cloth to reveal a smooth, radiant complexion.

Customise Your Mask:

For the best resutls, mix our 3-in-1 Maca Mask with the appropriate base for yoru skin type.

Normal to combination skin - Pure Water

Dry Skin - Natural Yogurt

Sensitive - Dry Skin - Calming Rose Super Tonic

Oily - Combination - Balancing Citrus SuperTonic

About Fair Trade Lebanon

Fair Trade Lebanon (FTL) is a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) born in the year of 2006 out of the will of a few Lebanese who wanted to change the livelihoods of disadvantaged rural populations in Lebanon.

They noticed the existence in rural regions of an underemployed agricultural infrastructure along with outstanding traditional skills.

The choice of Fair Trade was based on the desire to create export opportunities for the traditional small producers and food processing cooperatives living in these areas.

The association has the dual aim of improving the living conditions of rural populations as well as developing foreign exchanges related to Fair Trade in Lebanon.
